“A person always doing his/her best becomes a natural leader, by example.”- Joe Dinaggio.
I have always been a multicultural and diversity-orientated person, who believes that people from different backgrounds and cultures make the best diverse team that can cater to everyone as a global citizen. I got involved with the Malaysian Society Deakin University (MSDU) club as a club member and found it to be interactive and student-oriented. I have had a positive influence on the values and confidence and well-being of other students. Based on my advice and suggestions for the club, the president of the club asked me to apply for becoming the vice-treasurer of the club for the 2019-2020 session. In a committee of Malaysian students, I became the first Indian to hold an executive position. I made sure the events are free of cost as it was a financially challenging time, and we were successful in engaging students in the activities and events that were conducted by my club in an online and on-campus mode.
In the 2020-2021 session, I got promoted to the position of Vice-Secretary.
My duties include a lot of administration work as well as making sure the events and programs are organized by the club smoothly. I had to efficiently delegate tasks to the team members based on their areas of expertise and interests. I also had to resolve issues of the student members and the ones that rose in the team. My tasks included attracting new memberships to the club not only from the Malaysian Community but also from the International Community. It also includes addressing students' problems and give them ideas to engage and network with more and more people.
Apart from my duties as a vice treasurer and vice secretary, I had organized various events and had helped to improve the relationship between other Malaysian organizations across Australia. I used to work on the feedback received after each event and always strive to achieve better for the student community. The skills that I had practiced the most were cross-cultural communication, critical and innovative thinking, teamwork, problem-solving, and risk assessment.
“Thank You for showing your high commitment levels towards MSDU. I do appreciate how you fit in despite all the differences in our cultures and work styles. It has been a great pleasure working with you and I know from what you’re doing now, it will lead you to greater things in life”- Wan Ying, MSDU 2019- 2020 President
