Orientation Ambassador
“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.”- Warren Bennis.
My first experience with Orientation Ambassador was in my first O-week back in November 2019, and my campus tour leader helped me to understand the university and different terminology that made my initial weeks helpful. By the end of the campus tour, I had a vision, and I could see myself in those pink T-shirts with an Orientation Ambassador tag helping new students. I was inspired by the Student Helping Student program as it helped new students especially internationals who are unknown to Australian educational institutions, and improved student experience. Therefore, I started volunteering for the Orientation Ambassador Program and enhanced the orientation experience of new students. I provided them with support and resources that would need to comfortably settle in the initial weeks at the University. The students were aware of the fact that if they had any issues, they could directly contact me, and I would be able to help them or direct them to get assistance, therefore, I was more than just a volunteer.
It was through this Connect Program that I learned to start delegating tasks amongst the team members depending on the specialty and choice of the team members. In this role, I learned to take initiative and recognized that helping others and developing my skills with them is essential to become a good leader. I gained strong organizational and time management skills through proactive participation throughout the program.
The feedback I received from my Peers, Supervisors, and the students I had helped out summarised that I had a positive influence over the confidence and well-being of others.
“Payal was extremely committed to her role and she diligently performed her duties.
I had the opportunity to work in her team, where she portrayed excellent leadership skills. She seamlessly led the team to perform very well, constantly motivating us in the process.”- Akshay Madhavan
